  5. This README contains installation notes, feature highlights, and 
  6. other information to get you started using CompuServe 2.5.  If you 
  7. have already installed CompuServe 2.5, please skip the System 
  8. Requirements and Installation Notes and continue with the sections 
  9. that follow.

  11. System Requirements
  12.  
  13. - 4 Mb RAM (8 recommended)
  14. - 15 Mb available on hard drive
  15. - 386 (or higher) processor
  16. - VGA monitor at 640 by 480 resolution
  17. - Windows 3.1, Windows for Workgroups 3.11
  18. - 9600 baud connection rate
  19.  
  20. A multimedia computer is not required, but enables you to enjoy a 
  21. richer online experience with the use of sound and enhanced graphics 
  22. capabilities.

  24. Installation Notes
  25.  
  26. The installation procedure has been simplified and contains step-by-
  27. step instructions to guide you through the installation process. 
  28.  
  29. The installation program installs CompuServe 2.5, the CompuServe 
  30. dialer, and the Microsoft Internet Explorer 2.1. 
  31.  
  32. Note:  When delivered and installed as part of the CompuServe 2.5 
  33. installation, Microsoft's Internet Explorer 2.1 does not currently 
  34. include "MailTo:" support, which enables you to send email messages 
  35. via links on Web pages.  CompuServe plans to provide this Microsoft 
  36. mail option in a future, downloadable version, available from the 
  37. Information Service and a Web site to be announced.  For more 
  38. information on sending Internet mail, refer to the CompuServe 2.5 
  39. Help system.

  41. Feature Highlights of CompuServe 2.5
  42.  
  43. New Browser with RPA Support
  44. CompuServe 2.5 integrates information from the CompuServe 
  45. Information Service (CIS) and the Internet's World Wide Web (WWW). 
  46. The Internet Explorer browser is installed and configured 
  47. automatically with CompuServe 2.5.  When you are connected to CIS, 
  48. you will see buttons and menu items you can select to take you to 
  49. the WWW.  And, as a CompuServe member, you have the benefit of 
  50. Remote Password Authentication (RPA), which efficiently handles 
  51. identification, authentication, and authorization on the Internet so 
  52. that you can access Web sites of CompuServe Partners using only your 
  53. CompuServe password.

  55. You can also enter a Uniform Resource Locator (URL), such as 
  56. http://www.compuserve.com, directly into the Go field to get to an 
  57. Internet site. Once you are on the Internet, look for hyperlinks 
  58. back to services on CompuServe. 
  59.  
  60. Default Winsock Connection
  61. This type of connection is required to access the Internet. It is 
  62. configured and set up in your Session Settings during the 
  63. installation of CompuServe 2.5. You will be able to access 
  64. information on CIS and be on the Internet at the same time. 
  65.  
  66. Improved  Performance and Reliability
  67. Throughput and file download speed have been increased and new 
  68. scripts have been added to improve connection reliability. 
  69.  
  70. Dialer Features
  71. The CompuServe Dialer (CID) offers support for NCSI/NASI, which 
  72. enables additional connection configurations.  The updated dialer is 
  73. more robust and provides better throughput. It can be used with 
  74. Windows 95 without interfering with the operating system's 
  75. connection utilities. If you have configured Windows 95 to connect 
  76. to the CompuServe network, then you can opt not to use the 
  77. CompuServe Dialer.

  79. Internet Browser Option
  80. A new Internet Browser command has been added to the Services menu 
  81. and a corresponding button now appears on the default ribbon 
  82. (toolbar). Choosing this option starts the Internet Explorer 
  83. Browser. If Internet Explorer is running in the background, this 
  84. option brings the browser to the foreground. Similarly, you can 
  85. start up or return to CompuServe 2.5 from Internet Explorer by 
  86. clicking the CSi button on the toolbar.

  88. Filing Cabinet Search
  89. You can find items stored in the CompuServe 2.5 Filing Cabinet 
  90. quickly and easily using the new Search feature. Objects such as 
  91. mail messages, forum messages, articles, and news stories can be 
  92. stored in the filing cabinet. Once stored, you can find any of these 
  93. objects by date or date range, subject, sender or contributor (i.e., 
  94. from); or perform a full text search. You can search folders, In-
  95. Basket, Out-Basket, or a combination of all three.

  97. New Graphics
  98. CompuServe 2.5 introduces new graphics for the Explore Services menu 
  99. that will allow you to explore CompuServe effortlessly. The button 
  100. located at the top of this menu labeled CompuServe will take you to 
  101. an area that offers tools and information to help you browse for 
  102. specific information on the CompuServe Information Service (CIS). If 
  103. you know what you want, but aren't sure how to "GO" there, use one 
  104. of the 12 general interest buttons to get there in a hurry! 
  105.    
  106. CompuServe Viewer 
  107. When attending conferences, on-line moderators now have the ability 
  108. to send binary file(s) to enhance the experience for participants. 
  109. Binary files may be still motion video clips from a video feed 
  110. (graphic images sent at regular intervals), closed captioned text, 
  111. charts, sound, or pictures. The moderator can send any combination 
  112. of files and file types to conference participants. As a 
  113. participant, you will be able to see these conference additions by 
  114. utilizing the CompuServe Viewer technology that is built into 
  115. CompuServe 2.5. 
  116.  
  117. Secure logins
  118. Security is  built into CompuServe 2.5. Your password is not 
  119. transmitted across the network in a readable format. 
  120.  
  121. PNG Support
  122. Support for PNG (Portable Network Graphics) format has been added.  
  123. You can now look forward to using this optimized graphics format, as 
  124. PNG is integrated in services and applications across CIS.

  126. Customer Support 
  127. To increase usability or offer flexibility, several enhancements have been made.
  128.  
  129. - A General Preference has been added to control window handling. To 
  130. alter this preference access the Special menu and select 
  131. Preferences/General. Keep Windows Maximized is on by default. When a 
  132. window is maximized, subsequent windows will be maximized until you 
  133. restore the size. 
  134.  
  135. - A preference has been added for both Forum Conferencing and CB 
  136. Simulator to automatically update the "Who's Here" List every XX 
  137. seconds. To access Forum Conference preferences from the Special 
  138. menu select Preference/Forum/More... button. To access the CB 
  139. simulator preferences from the Special menu select Preference/CB 
  140. Simulator.

  142. - Help is offered from the Connection Failure dialog providing 
  143. diagnosis and correction assistance.  
  144.  
  145. - Addressing mail to non-CompuServe mail users has been simplified 
  146. by adding an address type list box on the Recipient dialog. 
  147.  
  148. - International icons have been added throughout the product to 
  149. accommodate the global CompuServe Membership. 
  150.  
  151. - Tool tips are available to identify iconic tools (buttons) 
  152. throughout CompuServe 2.5. A preference has been added to disable 
  153. the tool tips if they do not offer you assistance. To alter this 
  154. preference, from the Special menu select Preferences/General, then 
  155. clear the check box to turn the tool tips off.

  157. - The View button has been added so you can view most files while 
  158. online. If the file to be viewed has a Windows file association 
  159. defined, the appropriate application will be used to view the file.

  161. Internet Explorer Features 
  162.  
  163. Spyglass Dynamic Data Exchange (SDDE) 
  164. SDDE is supported, enabling communications between CompuServe 2.5 
  165. and Internet Explorer. This makes it possible for Internet sites to 
  166. build in links to specific information within the CompuServe 
  167. Information Service.

  169. Hyperlinks from the Web to CompuServe Services
  170. Definition of the GOCSERVE application extension enables Web page 
  171. developers to create hyperlinks from the Web to specific services on 
  172. the CompuServe Information Service (CIS). 
  173.  
  174. Simplified URL Entry
  175. Entering http://www sites is easier because you do not have to enter 
  176. the entire site address. For example, enter "compuserve" at the Web 
  177. Page prompt and Internet Explorer automatically accesses 
  178. "http://www.compuserve.com".  This feature works for any URL 
  179. formatted as "http://www.XXXXX.com".
